Clerks II: Electric Bugaloo. No, really. It has dancing. |
|
Saw this over the weekend. Big fan of the Askewniverse, particularly Dogma and of course the original Clerks. Well, the first thing to say is that this is not a great movie. It's not even a very good one. The plot's thin at best, there's far too many self-aware moments (while music/dance sequences do work in most comedies, here it just felt weak and more than a bit too weird, even by this movie's standards), and the dweeby new guy Elias is just a terrible character overall. That said, it's also got quite a few moments that are nothing short of hilarious, especially for vets of Smith's other films. Or just those who have seen Silence of the Lambs. And the conclusion is oddly satisfying, even if the romantic side of things was painfully obvious as to how it would go about 30 minutes before the movie started. So I give it a six; the movie might be weak, but certain parts are so strong that they support the decaying frame anyhow.

A simple Kevin Smith request...
We know you bagged yourself a pretty cute wife. We know you're quite surprised with this yourself. We know you're enamoured with eveything she does.
(And her not using her married name doesn't mean we don't know she's your wife and you get to bone her on a nightly basis.)
Please refrain from placing your lovely wife in future movies.
It's nepotism at best, a big fucking mistake at worst.

So Kevin Smith has become the next Guy Ritchie. Though I haven't seen the new Clerks, his movies have been less enjoyable as of late, as what I saw of Jersey Girl was awful. But such is the effects of the wonderful drug called stardom. Eventually it gets the best of everyone as they all let it go to their head, and think everything they make will be excellent, because they made it.
Hopefully this will change, but until then looks like I'll be watching his older movies again (Dogma, Mallrats, Jay and Silent Bob Strike back, Clerks animated episode 4), instead of paying to watch his new stuff.
But for now it looks like
OMG Bear is Driving.
How can that be?

Oh no! |

Yeah, Schwalbach wasn't exactly the best actress, even if she has a decent rack. Also, Rosario Dawson was so much better looking than her that it boggled the mind that Dante would waver between them, even for a second. At least in the first movie the two chicks were roughly equivalent.
I tell you what Chris, my suggestion would be either go see this at the dollar theater, do various illegal things to acquire it on the computer, or wait until it comes out on DVD and one of our wealthier comrades purchases it. More than that, it does not really deserve. But at the same time, you do have to see it. It's necessary. Just not necessary enough to spend $7.75 on it.

I didn't care for this flick when I first saw it in theatres, but since seeing it again on DVD, I actually kind of like it now. I love the Dante and Randal characters, which I consider some of the best he's written. On the second viewing, I think it was these two characters - and Jay and Silent Bob of course - who won me over. Elias could have be ditched, the fiance could be been much better cast, and there could have been much more humour (the whole dialogue about the two trillogies just never worked for me the way I hoped it would, among other things). I still found it pretty enjoyable, just not as heavy on the funny as I was hoping. I think Smith's dialogue writing skills have diminished in recent years.

Not only could Elias have been ditched, his being ditched would be imperative to his movie rising above the 6 I originally bestowed upon it. Even after all these months the memory of how painfully ill-conceived, written, and acted his part was still burns me. Easily the most irritating character Smith has dreamed up.
And he probably has lost a step or two. It's already been six years since Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the last legitimately funny movie he made. And even that was not in the same league as Dogma or Clerks.

They were both good. Although Kevin Smiths writting has gone on the down side the last few years. I still loved both Clerks movies.
